How we handle canopy cleaning in Upper Dicker
We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers island canopies, plenum chambers and wall canopies, and people most often call us about a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and fat running down the front of the hood.
Somewhere as small as Upper Dicker, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Why act early in Upper Dicker
If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Upper Dicker rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

The process
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Upper Dicker.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after pictures and a next clean date.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Move anything stored near the system
Getting a quote
For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.
Advice
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- What state the system is in
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
What to send for a quote
To help us quote quickly, please include:
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Any previous report or certificate
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.
Keeping the system healthy
Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.
Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning won’t do:
- A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
- Bent or broken filters
- Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think before you book.
Parts of the system we cover
- Wall canopies
- Canopy light fittings
- Grease gutters
- Baffle filters

- Island canopies
Signs you need canopy cleaning in Upper Dicker
A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Bede's Prep School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
Questions to ask before you book
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- Whether the figure could change on the day
Upper Dicker: your questions answered
Which council inspects kitchens in Upper Dicker?
The local authority for Upper Dicker is Wealden council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Can you get to a site in Upper Dicker?
Yes. Upper Dicker is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Why does grease run off the canopy edge?
Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.
How much notice do you need?
The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.
Who is the responsible person?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it’s the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. In shared or managed buildings, a landlord, facilities manager or managing agent can share the duty.
Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?
The full canopy, inside and out, and the plenum behind it. Grease troughs and filter channels are emptied and degreased as part of the job.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.
