How we handle canopy cleaning in Uppend

For canopies and hoods in Uppend, the work follows the same careful routine: filters out, plenum scraped and degreased, then the canopy cleaned inside and out. Before and after pictures go into your report. Typical jobs include a sticky, discoloured canopy and a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away, across baffle filters, grease gutters and wall canopies.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • A fan that cannot pull enough air because it’s worn out

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies

For landlords and multi-site operators

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Uppend kitchens: local notes

Uppend is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Uppend is about 30 miles from central London, well within the area we cover across London and the South East. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, so the visit fits around the site.

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Uppend (Much Hadham Palace is about 4.7 miles south-west), fitting access panels needs care. A hospital like Herts and Essex Hospital, about 3.9 miles south-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Uppend is about 3 miles north of Bishop's Stortford, in Hertfordshire. We carry out canopy cleaning for commercial premises of every kind in Uppend and the rest of Hertfordshire. Across Hertfordshire, we cover 381 places, Uppend among them. There’s also a page for Chelmsford, about 19 miles away.

Our technicians cover all of CM23 for canopy cleaning and the roads nearby. Other places close to Uppend include Mount Pleasant (1 mile north-east), Farnham (1 mile south), Manuden (1 mile east), The Willows (2 miles north-west) and Stocking Pelham (2 miles north-west). Further out, we also cover Stevenage (14 miles west), Bishop's Stortford (3 miles south), Hoddesdon (13 miles south-west), Hertford (12 miles south-west), Ware (10 miles south-west) and Baldock (15 miles west).

Around Uppend

The nearest railway station is Stansted Mountfitchet station, roughly 2.9 miles east. Well-known places in the area include Bishops Stortford Local History Museum (2.4 miles south) and Herts and Essex Hospital (3.9 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Uppend

Is Uppend within the area you cover?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Uppend is covered. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Which fire service covers Uppend?

Fire safety enforcement in Uppend is handled by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. Typically it takes a few hours for most canopies.

How much notice do you need?

For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Will I get a report after the canopy clean?

Every clean comes with a photo report that lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach. Where the whole system is cleaned, you also get a TR19 certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

How much of the canopy do you clean?

We clean the canopy inside and out, including the seams, troughs and gutters. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned as well.

How we price canopy cleaning

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Parking and loading at the site

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What we need to know

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Need a price for canopy cleaning? Please call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.

When to call us in Uppend

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge

Where a hall near Church of St Mary the Virgin, or anywhere in Uppend, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • What insurance they carry

Questions to ask before you book

What happens if it’s left?

Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.

Why book with us

  • CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
  • One number for every site across the South East and London
  • We diagnose before we treat
  • A written report with photos after each visit

Read what affects the cost and our accreditations and certificates.

The process

We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a few hours for most canopies. In a small place like Uppend, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Tell us where we can park and unload

Getting a quote

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What staff can safely do

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
