Questions from Twitton

Can you work in Twitton outside opening hours?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The work in Twitton can fit around your hours. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Twitton during the holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. There are about 6 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Twitton. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not typically. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages to keep things running.

What information do you need?

Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

How long is a canopy clean?

Allow a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We’ll confirm how long when we quote.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together as one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Twitton

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. If you have a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and canopy gutters full of old fat, we can put it right, from wall canopies, canopy light fittings and plenum chambers onwards.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What we are called out for in Twitton

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge

Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Twitton is Sevenoaks Hospital, about 2.1 miles south-east.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

What canopy cleaning looks like in Twitton

Food Standards Agency data counts about 4 restaurants, cafés and canteens in and around Twitton, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. It’s Sevenoaks council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Twitton. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Twitton is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Historic houses near Twitton, such as Lullingstone Castle about 3.3 miles north, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. For schools such as Otford Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies

Leave it or put it right?

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line while the fan strains. Cleaning restores the path the air should take. Somewhere as small as Twitton, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.

The process

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. The timing of a visit to Twitton is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Ask for a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
