What canopy cleaning looks like in Swanley

Food Standards Agency records list about 19 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 12 sandwich bars and takeaways in Swanley and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Swanley sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Kitchens in Swanley get their food hygiene inspections from Sevenoaks council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Queen Mary's Hospital (about 3.4 miles north-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Where a hall near St Mary the Virgin, or anywhere in Swanley, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Bartholomew's Catholic Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Swanley

A greasy canopy tells an inspector a lot before they’ve opened anything. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is normally in a worse state. Canopy cleaning deals with both, so the hood looks right and works properly. The work covers wall canopies, baffle filters and canopy light fittings, and the jobs we see most are filters that clog soon after cleaning and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters.

Size doesn’t change the work: a kitchen in a place like Swanley gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

FAQs for Swanley

Do you work overnight in Swanley?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. That way a site in Swanley does not have to lose a day’s trading. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

Which fire service covers Swanley?

That’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

What happens to the waste?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

You get a photo report with before and after photos. If the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, plus food production and leisure sites.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

What is TR19?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

For landlords and multi-site operators

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

What affects the quote in Swanley

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • What state the system is in

The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

What to send for a quote

You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The site address and the type of premises

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Check filters are not leaving gaps

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Different parts, different methods

Pub and hotel kitchens

Few pubs and hotels can shut the kitchen for a day. We clean the canopy overnight or between services so the kitchen keeps trading.

Grease troughs and gutters

Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. We empty and degrease them, so they can do their job again.

What a clean won’t put right

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It won’t put right:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • Bent or broken filters
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Wall canopies
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers

How it works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. In a smaller place like Swanley, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Advice

What staff can safely do

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
