Need canopy cleaning in Three Bridges?

What your team can do, and what needs us

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Canopy cleaning in Three Bridges

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, grease gutters and island canopies, and the jobs we see most are a filter housing caked in grease and an EHO comment about the canopy.

In a smaller place like Three Bridges, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Three Bridges: your questions answered

Which fire authority looks after Three Bridges?

Fire safety enforcement in Three Bridges is handled by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you cover smaller places like Three Bridges?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Three Bridges is covered. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

Size and build-up decide it. Typically it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.

How do you protect the area?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

Where does the waste go?

We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it does not spread.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Bent or broken filters
  • A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

What the work covers

  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters

For landlords and multi-site operators

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.

What we do, step by step

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, and we clear up before we go. Tell us when your site near Three Bridges is quiet and the visit will be booked for then.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

Getting a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price, before any work starts.

What we are called out for in Three Bridges

The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • A hood coated in old grease

School kitchens, at schools like Pound Hill Junior School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether a written report and pictures are included
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
  • What hours they’ll be on site

Questions to ask before you book

What happens if it’s left?

Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. Booking now means the visit to Three Bridges is planned around you, not forced by a breakdown.

What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Three Bridges kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records include about 22 pubs, bars and clubs and about 7 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in Three Bridges and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Kitchens in Three Bridges get their food hygiene inspections from Crawley council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Three Bridges sits within the area of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

A kitchen near Three Bridges station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval. A hospital like Crawley Hospital, about 1.6 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Three Bridges is about 1 mile east of Crawley, in West Sussex. From the centre of Three Bridges to the outskirts, canopy cleaning is available to all kinds of commercial premises, from small sites to large estates. Nearby, we also carry out canopy cleaning in Pound Hill (1 mile north-east), Worth (1 mile south-east), Maidenbower (1 mile south-east), Tilgate (1 mile south-west) and Crawley (1 mile west). We also work in nearby towns such as Horsham (8 miles south-west), Haywards Heath (9 miles south), Burgess Hill (11 miles south), East Grinstead (7 miles east), Billingshurst (14 miles south-west) and Bewbush (3 miles west).

What the work involves, part by part

Plenums and filter housings

The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. It catches whatever gets past the filters, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. The joint between canopy and wall is a common grease trap, so we clean along it as well as the inner skin.
