Canopy cleaning across Studdal

For landlords and multi-site operators

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.

Canopy cleaning in Studdal

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you’re dealing with condensation running down the canopy and grease dripping from the canopy edge, we can put it right.

In a small place like Studdal, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after every visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Studdal kitchens: local notes

Environmental health officers from Dover council inspect food businesses in Studdal. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Fire safety in Studdal falls to Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near East Studdal Church Hall or elsewhere in Studdal, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Buckland Hospital is the nearest hospital to Studdal, about 4.3 miles south.

Studdal is about 4 miles north of Dover, in Kent. Whether your site is in the middle of Studdal or further out, we cover canopy cleaning for every kind of premises, from a single unit to a large public building. Between visits

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Studdal?

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Studdal (Walmer Castle is about 4 miles east), fitting access panels needs care.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part

Studdal questions

Do you work in villages like Studdal?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Studdal included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Studdal?

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Studdal. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?

We clean when you’re not cooking, so service is not affected. Evenings, overnight and weekends are all possible.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

It takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Your quote will give a time.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. Then call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

When something else is needed

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers

The process

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Studdal knowing what to expect.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

How to get a quote

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few photos and any previous report or certificate. Then give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

Different parts, different methods

School and staff canteen kitchens

A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

Grease troughs and gutters

Some troughs drain to a cup or drawer, we empty and clean that as well, and we’ll show staff where it is.
