Need canopy cleaning in Stanmore?

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Stanmore

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. If you have a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away and filters that clog soon after cleaning, we can put it right.

In a smaller place like Stanmore, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with pictures after every visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Multi-site and managed buildings

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

What happens if it’s left?

A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. It’s better to plan the work at a site near Stanmore than wait for a failure.

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Part by part

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

Canopy cleaning around Stanmore

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 116 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 30 sandwich bars and takeaways across Stanmore and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. In Stanmore, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Winchester City council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Stanmore. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

School kitchens, at schools like Stanmore Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Stanmore is Royal Hampshire County Hospital, about 0.7 miles north-east. Church and community hall kitchens, near Saint Luke or anywhere around Stanmore, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Stanmore questions

Do you work in villages like Stanmore?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Stanmore included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Stanmore in the summer holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 20 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Stanmore. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

How much notice should we give?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Usually because the troughs or gutters are full, or the plenum is overloaded. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.

What information do you need?

Some pictures and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where needed. A fixed quote follows.

When it’s something else

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
  • Bent or broken filters
  • Electrical faults in the canopy

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Where we work

  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers

How the visit works

A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the canopy cleaning, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Your opening hours decide when we come to Stanmore, not ours.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
