Canopy and hood cleaning in Oliver's Battery, Hampshire
Canopy cleaning across Oliver's Battery and nearby, booked around your opening hours and signed off in writing with photos.
- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
- Fat running down the front of the hood
Different parts, different methods
Pub and hotel kitchens
In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. A thorough clean puts that right.
School and staff canteen kitchens
School and canteen kitchens often cook to set hours, so the canopy can be cleaned when the kitchen is closed. We often clean them in holidays or at weekends.
About our canopy cleaning in Oliver's Battery
A greasy canopy tells an inspector a lot before they’ve opened anything. What isn’t seen, behind the filters, tends to be worse. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it does not. The work covers grease gutters, island canopies and plenum chambers, and the jobs we see most are a sticky, discoloured canopy and grease channels that no longer drain.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, ready for your insurer.

Multi-site and managed buildings
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Why act early in Oliver's Battery
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. Cleaning it removes that fuel. In a place like Oliver's Battery, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.

Questions from Oliver's Battery
Is Oliver's Battery within the area you cover?
Yes. Oliver's Battery is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Oliver's Battery?
That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.
Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?
On its own, a canopy clean is a useful extra rather than a full TR19 clean. Your report lists exactly what was cleaned so nobody mistakes it for a full system clean.
What accreditations do you have?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
Are the filters cleaned too?
We remove the filters to reach the plenum, then clean and refit them. Any that are damaged are noted on the report.
Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?
We clean the canopy inside and out, including the seams, troughs and gutters. The plenum and filter housing behind the filters are cleaned too.
What does canopy cleaning cost?
The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll usually reply within one working day.
How the visit works
Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Oliver's Battery, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
- Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Preparing for the visit
- Move anything stored near the system
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Find the previous report, if there is one

Advice
Common problems we fix in Oliver's Battery
However carefully a kitchen in Oliver's Battery is run, the canopy still collects grease. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.
What we are most often called out for:
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Filters that never seem to stay clean
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Royal Hampshire County Hospital (about 1.5 miles north-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Looking after it afterwards
So the system stays in good health:
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Check filters are not leaving gaps
- Keep every filter in place while cooking
We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.
A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.
