About our canopy cleaning in Standford

Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. We start the check-up there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. If you have grease channels that no longer drain and an EHO comment about the canopy, we can put it right.

For a kitchen in or near Standford, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with pictures after each visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

Grease, kitchens and Standford

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 6 pubs and bars within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Standford. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. It’s East Hampshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Standford. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Standford is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Mark's Sacred Church or elsewhere in Standford, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Chase Community Hospital (about 1.1 miles west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Standford is about 7 miles south-east of Alton, in Hampshire. Standford: your questions answered

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Standford out of term?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 3 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Standford. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Standford?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Standford. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. As a guide, it takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. For TR19, the whole system needs cleaning, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?

The clean is done out of hours: after service, overnight or before opening. Equipment under the canopy needs to be off and cool.

Different parts, different methods

Grease troughs and gutters

Grease channels around the canopy collect what runs down the inside. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, which means grease settles on all four sides. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

Why deal with it now?

Getting the canopy cleaned in Standford now saves a bigger job later. The work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, out of hours so service carries on. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. A fault that closes a site in a village like Standford affects everyone who depends on it.

We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

How it works

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Somewhere as small as Standford, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

When to call us in Standford

A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Weyford Nursery and Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

What your quote should include

  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
  • Whether the price is fixed
  • When the next visit should be, and why

Questions to ask before you book

When it’s something else

Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Island canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Standford and across Hampshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
