Canopy cleaning for sites in Springfield

Different parts, different methods

Grease troughs and gutters

Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. Cleaning it clears the drip.

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Springfield

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. The work covers grease gutters, canopy light fittings and plenum chambers, and people most often call us about grease filters blocking between washes and heavy deposits behind the grease filters.

Kitchens around a place like Springfield are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

We’ve been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Springfield and across Essex. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

FAQs for Springfield

Do you cover smaller places like Springfield?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Springfield?

That is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

We never leave them off the paperwork. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

A canopy-only clean is possible, but it is not a full TR19 clean. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What kinds of canopies do you clean?

Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. The survey tells us how best to clean yours, from pictures or a visit.

Are the filters cleaned too?

The filters are removed, cleaned and put back. Each filter is checked for fit as it goes back, because gaps let grease through.

How far ahead should we book?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

What happens if it’s left?

When grease clogs the filters and plenum, the canopy can’t draw air as it should. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line while the fan strains. Cleaning restores the path the air should take. Systems on quieter sites still build up dirt and wear, just more slowly.

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Common problems we fix in Springfield

Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. Left to fill up, they spill over, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Fat running down the front of the hood

School kitchens, at schools like Barnes Farm Junior School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • What paperwork you get at the end

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

Canopy cleaning in Springfield: the local picture

Food Standards Agency data counts about 33 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 16 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Springfield. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Food hygiene inspections in Springfield are the job of Chelmsford council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Fire safety in Springfield falls to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

If you cook for passing trade around Beaulieu Park station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. A hospital like Priory Hospital, about 0.9 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Honest limits

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It won’t put right:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • A hood that does not cover the cooking line
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system

If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies

How the visit works

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes a few hours for most canopies. A site near Springfield usually has room to park, so the questions are about access to the system and your hours.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Let us know about parking and loading
