What a clean won’t put right

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly.

Canopy cleaning in Maldon, done properly

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, island canopies and plenum chambers, and common reasons people get in touch are canopy gutters full of old fat and grease dripping from the canopy edge.

In a town like Maldon, most of the kitchen extracts we’re asked about belong to restaurants, cafés, pubs, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Each has a canopy, filters, ductwork and a fan to keep clear of grease.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

Looking after it afterwards

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated

After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.

Maldon kitchens: local notes

Sea air reaches Maldon, which sits within about 1 mile of the coast. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. The FSA’s data shows about 22 pubs and bars and about 3 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses registered within about 1.5 miles of central Maldon. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service covers Maldon. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in Maldon, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What staff can safely do

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Multi-site and managed buildings

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Common problems we fix in Maldon

The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

The symptoms we are asked about most include:

  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Maldon Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Maldon

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Maldon?

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Maldon. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Maldon?

Food hygiene inspections in Maldon are carried out by Maldon council. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

What kinds of canopies do you clean?

Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. For a quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

How do you protect the area?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

What happens to the waste?

It leaves the site with us when we go. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

The filters come out so the plenum behind them can be cleaned, then clean and refit them. We will tell you if any need replacing.

Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?

Inside and out, including the seams, troughs and gutters. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned as well.

What happens if it’s left?

Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Booking now keeps it a routine visit to Maldon rather than an urgent one.

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

Why us?

  • One number for every site across the South East and London
  • A fixed price before any work starts
  • Every visit written up, with photos
  • We are fully insured

The process

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Work in Maldon is typically booked after closing, early in the morning or on a closed day.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

How to prepare

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
