Canopy cleaning in South Ascot

About our canopy cleaning in South Ascot

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. Where that is the case, we’ll be clear that the ducts and fan aren’t included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers plenum chambers, island canopies and canopy light fittings, and people most often call us about a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and smoke hanging around the canopy during service.

In a smaller place like South Ascot, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What staff can safely do

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

South Ascot: your questions answered

Can the work in South Ascot be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. Your customers, staff or residents in South Ascot needn’t be disturbed. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in South Ascot?

The local authority for South Ascot is Windsor and Maidenhead council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Is South Ascot in your area?

Yes. We cover South Ascot and the rest of Windsor and Maidenhead, as part of our work across South East England and London. To book, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

What is TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

What happens to the filters during the clean?

We take them out, clean them and put them back. We also offer a filter exchange service for between cleans.

Is the inside of the hood cleaned?

The full canopy, inside and out, and the plenum behind it. Troughs, gutters and filter housings are cleaned too.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always survey first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.

Looking after it afterwards

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy

We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Kitchen extracts in South Ascot

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 36 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of South Ascot. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. In South Ascot, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Windsor and Maidenhead council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Fire safety in South Ascot falls to Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of All Souls or elsewhere in South Ascot, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as St Francis Catholic Primary School or anywhere near South Ascot, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • What state the system is in

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price, before we start.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in South Ascot and across Windsor and Maidenhead. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

What a clean will not put right

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies

What happens on the day

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a few hours for most canopies, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Evenings, weekends or a closed day all work for a site in a place like South Ascot.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Advice

Different parts, different methods

Plenums and filter housings

A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.
