Canopy cleaning in Salfords

Canopy cleaning in Salfords

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers grease gutters, canopy light fittings and wall canopies, and the jobs we see most are poor capture at the hood and canopy gutters full of old fat.

Work in a small place like Salfords starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after each visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

How the job changes from site to site

Grease troughs and gutters

Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.

Plenums and filter housings

Behind neglected filters, the plenum can be heavily coated. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit ends with a dated report and pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Surrey. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.

Grease, kitchens and Salfords

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 12 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 10 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Salfords. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Fire safety in Salfords falls to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Environmental health officers from Reigate and Banstead council inspect food businesses in Salfords. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Christ the King or elsewhere in Salfords, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Commuter trade near Salfords station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

What happens on the day

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a few hours for most canopies. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Salfords can be planned properly.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Do you need canopy cleaning in Salfords?

Moisture in the air mixes with the grease on the canopy. As the canopy cools, condensation forms, carrying grease with it. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

Common reasons sites call us include:

  • Poor capture at the hood
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as East Surrey Hospital (about 1.3 miles north), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Why it’s worth doing now in Salfords

Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we will talk you through it.

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Check all filters are fitted before service

A before and after photo report follows the clean. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Salfords questions

Do you work in villages like Salfords?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Can a school canteen extract in Salfords be done out of term time?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 4 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Salfords. Send us your term dates when you call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will fit the work in.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that can’t wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.

When do you clean the canopy?

We clean when the kitchen is closed: after service, overnight or before opening. Equipment under the canopy needs to be off and cool.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
