Canopy cleaning for sites in Park Wood

For landlords and multi-site operators

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Park Wood

Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. What is not seen, behind the filters, tends to be worse. Canopy cleaning deals with both, so the hood looks right and works properly. We are often asked to deal with drips from the canopy onto the range and grease channels that no longer drain, on baffle filters, grease gutters and canopy light fittings.

Size does not change the work: a kitchen in a place like Park Wood gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with pictures, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

How the visit works

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes a few hours for most canopies. A site near Park Wood typically has room to park, so the questions are about access to the system and your hours.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after photos go into your report.

Before we arrive

  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Advice

Why it’s worth doing now in Park Wood

Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. Booking now means the visit to Park Wood is planned around you, not forced by a breakdown.

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Different parts, different methods

Grease troughs and gutters

Grease channels around the canopy collect what runs down the inside. We empty and degrease them, so they can do their job again.

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Park Wood

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Park Wood (Restoration House is about 4.9 miles north-west), fitting access panels needs care.

Questions to ask before you book

Park Wood questions

Which fire authority looks after Park Wood?

It’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Park Wood. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Park Wood out of term?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. With about 8 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Park Wood, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Will I get a report after the canopy clean?

Before and after photos go into a report, listing what was cleaned. Where the whole system is cleaned, you also get a TR19 certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What information do you need?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few photos and any previous report.

Where does the waste go?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We do not leave it behind.

Are the filters cleaned too?

Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. We also offer a filter exchange service for between cleans.

What about areas you can’t get to?

We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

What a clean won’t put right

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before booking.

What the work covers

  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters

Park Wood kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 25 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 21 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Park Wood. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Park Wood sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Food hygiene inspections in Park Wood are the job of Medway council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
