What canopy cleaning looks like in North Ockendon

Look up North Ockendon on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 17 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within about 1.5 miles of central North Ockendon. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Kitchens in North Ockendon get their food hygiene inspections from Havering council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Most London extract cleaning happens at night, after the last service.

About our canopy cleaning in North Ockendon

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers grease gutters, island canopies and canopy light fittings, and common reasons people get in touch are poor capture at the hood and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. In North Ockendon, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with pictures of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

How we price canopy cleaning

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Asking for a quote

When you contact us, it’s useful to have:

  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before work begins.

What we do, step by step

Your staff do not need to do much on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. If your building in North Ockendon has sign-in rules, permits or key holders, mention them when you book.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

How to get a quote

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Advice

Between visits

Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:

  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that’s cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. We keep it to what matters.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What happens if it’s left?

Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. In North Ockendon, a planned overnight visit is much easier than closing unexpectedly.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.

Different parts, different methods

Pub and hotel kitchens

In pubs and hotels, the kitchen may be busy for much of the day. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

Plenums and filter housings

Behind neglected filters, the plenum can be heavily coated. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.

Common problems we fix in North Ockendon

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. As the canopy cools, condensation forms and runs with the grease. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Mary Magdalene or elsewhere in North Ockendon, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • When the next visit should be, and why

Questions to ask before booking

Common questions in North Ockendon

Do you clean school canteen extracts around North Ockendon out of term?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Around North Ockendon, the Food Standards Agency lists about 4 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we will fit the work in.

Can the work in North Ockendon be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. That way a site in North Ockendon doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Where does the waste go?

We take it away at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What about areas you cannot get to?

We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

Are you fully insured?

Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor for clients who vet their contractors.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so you keep your normal hours.

What a clean won’t put right

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer before you book.
