Canopy cleaning across Netley

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Netley

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. Common call-outs are for poor capture at the hood and a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection, on baffle filters, wall canopies and plenum chambers.

In a smaller place like Netley, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

What a clean will not put right

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

What we work on in Netley

  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters
  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies

Part by part

Wall canopies

A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. We work along the canopy section by section, with pictures for each.

Island canopies

With filters on more than one side, an island canopy has more plenum to clean. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • What state the system is in

A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

What we do, step by step

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Visits to a place like Netley are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

Ask for a quote

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To get going, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Related advice

Leave it or put it right?

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. The kitchen gets hotter and smokier, and the fan works harder for less. Cleaning restores the path the air should take. Light use slows the build-up but doesn’t stop it.

What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Netley?

The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • A hood coated in old grease

For schools such as Netley Abbey Infant School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Before you book anyone

  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them

What canopy cleaning looks like in Netley

Netley is within about 1 mile of the coast. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 22 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 15 takeaways and sandwich shops across Netley and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Netley sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

A hospital like Coldeast, about 2.8 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Commuter trade near Netley station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

Netley questions

Which environmental health team covers Netley?

Food hygiene inspections in Netley are carried out by Eastleigh council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Who is the fire and rescue service for Netley?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Netley. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Is Netley in your area?

Yes. We cover Netley and across Hampshire, as part of our work across South East England and London. To book, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.

Which sectors do you work in?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Where does the waste go?

It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.
