Neatham questions

Who inspects food businesses in Neatham?

In Neatham, it’s East Hampshire council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Can you work in Neatham outside opening hours?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. That way a site in Neatham doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.

Are the filters cleaned too?

The filters are removed, cleaned and put back. We check each one seats properly, because gaps let grease through.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.

Are you accredited?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We have been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.

Do you cover Neatham?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Neatham.

What is TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

Canopy cleaning in Neatham

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters, we can help, from plenum chambers, baffle filters and island canopies onwards.

In a village or hamlet like Neatham, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

How we price canopy cleaning

Your quote is based on your site. We consider:

  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • How big the system is
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • A few general shots of the system

For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You will usually have a quote within one working day.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

When to call us in Neatham

Any canopy in Neatham that is used for cooking will gather grease in the end. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, so a flare-up near a greasy hood can quickly become a fire.

Clients typically contact us after spotting something like this:

  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Alton Community Hospital (about 2.6 miles south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Questions to ask before booking

  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Leave it or put it right?

Getting the canopy cleaned in Neatham now saves a bigger job later. The work takes a few hours for most canopies, out of hours so service carries on. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. In a place like Neatham, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Why Neatham businesses choose us

  • A BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease
  • A written report with pictures after each visit
  • CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
  • Out-of-hours work and a 24/7 emergency line

The process

Every visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Neatham.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Get a fixed quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Neatham

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

Between visits

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Never run the range with a filter out
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill

The report gives a recommended next clean date. It reflects how long the kitchen cooks and how much grease we removed, in line with BESA guidance.

Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.

Neatham kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 4 bars, pubs and nightclubs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Neatham. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. In Neatham, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from East Hampshire council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Neatham sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Bentworth Hall is about 4.8 miles west), access may need planning. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Andrews' Endowed Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
