How we handle canopy cleaning in Nately Scures

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. Where that is the case, we’ll be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers baffle filters, wall canopies and canopy light fittings, and the jobs we see most are overflowing grease troughs and gutters and greasy streaks across the canopy.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What we do, step by step

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Somewhere like Nately Scures, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Move anything stored near the system

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Advice

What affects the quote in Nately Scures

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • What state the system is in
  • How big the system is
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Where the site is and how we reach it

You will not find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will explain what it covers.

Asking for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll usually have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What staff can safely do

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

Between visits

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It won’t replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.

What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

Wall canopies

At the back of the canopy, behind the filters, grease builds up unseen. With the filters out we can get to it and degrease it properly.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

For a kitchen in Nately Scures, a canopy that looks greasy can colour a whole inspection. A clean hood is a sign the kitchen is cared for, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. It’s simpler to plan the work at Nately Scures now than to arrange it in a hurry later.

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

Nately Scures kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records list about 10 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 4 takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Nately Scures. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Nately Scures sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Food hygiene inspections in Nately Scures are the job of Basingstoke and Deane council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St. Nicholas or elsewhere in Nately Scures, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital is the nearest hospital to Nately Scures, about 5.3 miles west. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Robert May's School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Questions from Nately Scures

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Nately Scures out of term?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Nately Scures. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we will fit the work in.

Do you work in villages like Nately Scures?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Nately Scures included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. The report includes a recommended next clean date.

What should I send you?

Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?

On its own, a canopy clean is a useful extra rather than a full TR19 clean. Your report lists exactly what was cleaned so nobody mistakes it for a full system clean.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.

Where does the waste go?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
