Canopy cleaning in Mount Bures

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Common call-outs are for filters that never seem to stay clean and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, on island canopies, baffle filters and wall canopies.

Somewhere as small as Mount Bures, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

What canopy cleaning cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It does not solve:

  • Bent or broken filters
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system
  • A light fitting that does not work

If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters

How it works

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes a few hours for most canopies. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Mount Bures, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

How to get a quote

We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

For landlords and multi-site operators

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Why deal with it now?

A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. Cleaning it removes that fuel. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Mount Bures is calmer for everyone.

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You’ll have a fixed price before we start.

Why us?

  • Fixed quotes, usually within one working day
  • Each visit written up, with photos
  • CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
  • Every job surveyed first

Read our cost guide and our accreditations.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • The condition of the system
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • The size of the system

What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

What to send for a quote

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Grease, kitchens and Mount Bures

In Mount Bures, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Braintree council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Mount Bures is about 49 miles from central London, well within the area we cover across London and the South East. A survey and a fixed quote come first, then the visit at a time that suits you.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Bures Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. If you run a café or takeaway near Bures station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Mount Bures

Can you come to Mount Bures after we close?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. It means the site in Mount Bures keeps running as normal. When you call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, mention when the site is quiet.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Mount Bures?

That is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

The law calls them the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

How much notice do you need?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?

Everything from the outer face to the plenum behind the filters. Grease troughs and filter channels are emptied and degreased as part of the job.

What happens to the waste?

It leaves the site with us when we go. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Mount Bures

Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge

A hospital like Halstead Hospital, about 5.7 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
