Canopy cleaning near Marley

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Marley

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers canopy light fittings, wall canopies and island canopies, and people most often call us about filters that never seem to stay clean and fat running down the front of the hood.

Somewhere as small as Marley, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Part by part

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. The joint between canopy and wall is a common grease trap, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.

Pub and hotel kitchens

In pubs and hotels, the kitchen may be busy for much of the day. That’s a lot of grease on the canopy, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

Looking after it afterwards

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Marley: your questions answered

Can you come to Marley after we close?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Marley keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Marley?

It’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Marley. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

That depends on who controls the premises. The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005 in England and Wales.

What do you do with what you remove?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.

Why does grease run off the canopy edge?

Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.

How much notice do you need?

Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

What a clean won’t put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll tell you honestly.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters

When to call us in Marley

Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

What we are most often called out for:

  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Augustine or elsewhere in Marley, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Canopy cleaning around Marley

At about 3 miles from the coast, Marley is close enough for sea air to matter. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. The fire and rescue service for Marley is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. It’s Dover council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Marley. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Marley (Walmer Castle is about 3.5 miles south-east), fitting access panels needs care. School kitchens, at schools like Northbourne Church of England Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

The process

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, and we clear up before we go. Somewhere as small as Marley, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Preparing for the visit

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Move anything stored near the system

Why it’s worth doing now in Marley

Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. In a busy kitchen, the canopy and plenum can need attention between TR19 cleans, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. In a place like Marley, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Why Marley businesses choose us

  • Fixed quotes, typically within one working day
  • One contact for all your sites in London and the South East
  • Every job surveyed first
  • Ventilation hygiene specialists since 2009

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The condition of the system
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Any permits to work or inductions

Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
