Canopy cleaning in Margaretting

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you are dealing with overflowing grease troughs and gutters and a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection, we can help.

Somewhere as small as Margaretting, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

FAQs for Margaretting

Will you come out to Margaretting?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Can the work in Margaretting be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The site is handed back ready to open. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your opening times and we will plan around them.

Is the inside of the hood cleaned?

We clean the canopy inside and out, along with its seams and grease channels. The plenum and filter housing behind the filters are cleaned too.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Which canopies and hoods do you clean?

Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. We work out the approach when we survey, from photos or a visit.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. The area we are working in has to be out of use while we’re there, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

What types of premises do you cover?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, which means grease settles on all four sides. We clean all of them, inside and out.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That’s a lot of grease on the canopy, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

What affects the quote in Margaretting

You will get a fixed price before we start. It’s based on:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The size of the system

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

Asking for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Your last certificate, test record or report

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Leave it or put it right?

A canopy clean in Margaretting now stops the grease spreading further. It takes a few hours for most canopies, done while the kitchen is closed. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Margaretting is calmer for everyone.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Margaretting

There are about 3 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Margaretting, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. Margaretting sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. In Margaretting, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Chelmsford council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Hylands is about 1.8 miles north-east), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. School kitchens, at schools like Anglo European School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What we are called out for in Margaretting

The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.

Clients usually contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Chelmsford and Essex Hospital about 2.8 miles north-east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Proof of insurance

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

What happens on the day

Each visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, do the work, clear away and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Margaretting can be planned properly.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after photos go into your report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
