Canopy cleaning in Ifold
Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. Our diagnosis starts there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. We are often asked to deal with a filter housing caked in grease and a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection, across plenum chambers, wall canopies and grease gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Ifold, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Different parts, different methods
School and staff canteen kitchens
A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. BESA guidance still sets a minimum interval for the whole system, and the canopy is part of it.
Wall canopies
At the back of the canopy, behind the filters, grease builds up unseen. With the filters out we can get to it and scrape it clean.
How the visit works
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Ifold can be planned properly.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Clear the space around the work
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Do you need canopy cleaning in Ifold?
Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.
These are the problems we see most often:
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Loxwood Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

For landlords and multi-site operators
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

What staff can safely do
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
Why act early in Ifold
Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, which makes a later clean slower and harder. It’s simpler to plan the work at Ifold now than to arrange it in a hurry later.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

FAQs for Ifold
Will you come out to Ifold?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Which fire service covers Ifold?
It’s West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Ifold. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.
How much notice do you need?
The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes usually come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?
Canopy cleaning is part of TR19, not the whole of it. We’ll make clear on the report which parts were cleaned so nobody mistakes it for a full system clean.
How do you protect the area?
We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?
Out-of-hours cleans are how we work, at night, early in the morning or at weekends. We leave it clean and ready for the next service.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
Kitchen extracts in Ifold
Environmental health officers from Chichester council inspect food businesses in Ifold. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Ifold, about 35 miles from central London, is within our usual area. Evening, overnight and weekend visits are all possible.
If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St John the Baptist or elsewhere in Ifold, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

When it’s something else
We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it won’t cover:
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
- A fan that cannot pull enough air because it’s worn out
- Electrical faults in the canopy
