Canopy cleaning in Higham
Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, we can help.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

The process
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Somewhere like Higham, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

How to get a quote
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

Part by part
Island canopies
Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.
Pub and hotel kitchens
Few pubs and hotels can shut the kitchen for a day. We clean the canopy overnight or between services so the kitchen keeps trading.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.
Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
- Give the canopy a wipe after service
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.
Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What staff can safely do
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Higham kitchens: local notes
Fire safety in Higham falls to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. It’s Babergh council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Higham. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Castle House is about 2.6 miles south-east), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Severalls Hospital is the nearest hospital to Higham, about 5.2 miles south-west. Where a hall near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in Higham, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
Higham is about 7 miles north-east of Colchester, in Essex. Higham: your questions answered
Which fire authority looks after Higham?
That’s Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Do you work at weekends in Higham?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Higham keeps running as normal. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
Are you insured?
Yes, fully. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it for clients who vet their contractors.
How much of the canopy do you clean?
The full canopy, inside and out, and the plenum behind it. Troughs, gutters and filter housings are cleaned too.
Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?
We remove the filters to reach the plenum, and they’re cleaned before going back in. We will tell you if any need replacing.
Where does the waste go?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What a clean will not put right
In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
- A canopy undersized for the equipment
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll say what we think before booking.
Where we work
- Island canopies
- Plenum chambers
- Wall canopies
- Baffle filters
- Grease gutters
- Canopy light fittings
What happens if it’s left?
If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.
