Canopy cleaning around High Beech
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 36 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 5 takeaways and sandwich shops across High Beech and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Kitchens in High Beech get their food hygiene inspections from Epping Forest council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service covers High Beech. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Claybury Hospital is the nearest hospital to High Beech, about 4.4 miles south. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Holy Innocents Church, or anywhere in High Beech, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

How we handle canopy cleaning in High Beech
Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. If you are dealing with poor capture at the hood and grease dripping from the canopy edge, we can help.
Work in a small place like High Beech starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

High Beech: your questions answered
Which environmental health team covers High Beech?
In High Beech, it’s Epping Forest council that carries out food hygiene inspections. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.
Can school kitchens in High Beech be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. The FSA’s register shows about 4 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of High Beech. You can call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the dates the site is empty.
What happens to the waste?
It leaves the site with us at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and where several people have control, each can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?
Wall canopies, island canopies and single hoods over individual appliances. Each one is cleaned inside and out, with the plenum behind the filters.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?
TR19® Grease is about the whole extract, from canopy to discharge. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.
Honest limits
We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so here are the limits:
- A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
- Electrical faults in the canopy
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Aftercare tips
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Give the canopy a wipe after service
- Never run the range with a filter out
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
- Keep the fan on through service
A before and after photo report follows the clean. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.
Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in High Beech and across Essex. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.
What happens on the day
Everything the job needs comes with us, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to High Beech and turn up when the site is quiet.
- We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Move anything stored near the system
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
Getting a quote
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll typically have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

What staff can safely do
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
What the work involves, part by part
Grease troughs and gutters
Some troughs drain to a cup or drawer, we empty and clean that as well, and we’ll show staff where it is.
School and staff canteen kitchens
In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.
Common problems we fix in High Beech
A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- A hood coated in old grease
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- Poor capture at the hood
- A filter housing caked in grease
School kitchens, at schools like High Beech CofE Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
What to look for in a quote
- What hours they’ll be on site
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Whether VAT is included
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
