Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Ruscote
Grease troughs, seams and the inside edge of the canopy are the spots a daily wipe misses. We scrape the heavy deposits, then degrease the surfaces with methods that suit the build-up, using hot water or steam where it helps. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and greasy streaks across the canopy, we can put it right.
Kitchens around a place like Ruscote are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.
Each visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

When it’s something else
To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:
- Filters that no longer seal in the housing
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- A dirty extract fan further along the system
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly.

The process
A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the canopy cleaning, clear away and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes a few hours for most canopies. Visits to a place like Ruscote are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.
- The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
Getting ready for the visit
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Clear the space around the work
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Different parts, different methods
School and staff canteen kitchens
A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.
Wall canopies
Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. The joint between canopy and wall is a common grease trap, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.
Grease, kitchens and Ruscote
Food Standards Agency records include about 21 pubs and bars and about 9 hotels and guest houses in and around Ruscote, up to about a mile and a half out. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Ruscote sits within the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Kitchens in Ruscote get their food hygiene inspections from Cherwell council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
For schools such as St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Horton General Hospital about 1.2 miles east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
What we are called out for in Ruscote
A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
The symptoms we’re asked about most are:
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- A filter housing caked in grease
Church and community hall kitchens, near St Paul's Church Centre or anywhere around Ruscote, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- If they look at the system before pricing
- Whether a written report and photos are included
Ruscote: your questions answered
Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Ruscote in the summer holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Ruscote, the Food Standards Agency lists about 9 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
Do you cover smaller places like Ruscote?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Every site has its own report.
How much notice should we give?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. The report includes a recommended next clean date.
Are you fully insured?
Yes, we are fully insured. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it, for sites that check contractor safety.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.
Why deal with it now?
Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. Light use slows the build-up but does not stop it.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos for straight advice and a fixed quote.
Why Ruscote businesses choose us
- One number for every site across the South East and London
- Trading since 2009
- CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
- Every job surveyed first
Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Give the canopy a wipe after service
- Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.
A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It won’t replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.
