Canopy cleaning in Chipstead

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

The underside of an island canopy is in full view so a clean, even finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.

School and staff canteen kitchens

A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

About our canopy cleaning in Chipstead

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include wet, greasy drips from the hood and a sticky, discoloured canopy, on wall canopies, canopy light fittings and grease gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Chipstead, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Chipstead

We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • The size of the system
  • The times the site is available
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Helping us quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You will typically have a quote within one working day.

Chipstead kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records list about 18 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 9 takeaways and sandwich shops across Chipstead and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. It’s Sevenoaks council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Chipstead. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Chipstead is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Knole House is about 2.8 miles south-east), access may need planning. Church and community hall kitchens, near Chapel of the Good Shepherd or anywhere around Chipstead, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we will come back with a fixed quote.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

FAQs for Chipstead

Is Chipstead within the area you cover?

Yes, Chipstead is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Chipstead during the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. With about 7 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Chipstead, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.

What information do you need?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Which sectors do you work in?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.

What accreditations do you have?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we are fully insured.

Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?

All of it: the outer surfaces, the inner skin, the seams and the troughs. We also remove the filters and clean the plenum and housing behind them, since that is where grease hides.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

A canopy only holds so much grease. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. Cleaning removes the cause.

Keeping the system healthy

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Filters are back in place and seated properly ready for the next service.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

The process

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Chipstead knowing what to expect.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after pictures and a next clean date.

Preparing for the visit

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Common problems we fix in Chipstead

Any canopy in Chipstead that is used for cooking will gather grease in the end. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean

A hospital like Sevenoaks Hospital, about 2 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
