Bury questions

Which council inspects kitchens in Bury?

In Bury, it’s Chichester council that carries out food hygiene inspections. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Can a school canteen extract in Bury be done out of term time?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Bury, the Food Standards Agency lists about 4 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a small pub to a hospital. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not normally. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

Canopy cleaning in Bury

Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that’s the case, we’ll be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers plenum chambers, grease gutters and wall canopies, and the jobs we see most are poor capture at the hood and condensation running down the canopy.

In a village or hamlet like Bury, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What a clean won’t put right

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy every part is to reach
  • What state the system is in
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • A single visit or a regular plan

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before we start.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

The process

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Bury.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

How to prepare

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. We clean it and the plenum behind the filters, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Plenums and filter housings

The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated

After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Bury

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 3 pubs, bars and clubs within about 1.5 miles of central Bury. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Bury is covered by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Environmental health officers from Chichester council inspect food businesses in Bury. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

A hospital like Arundel and District Hospital, about 3.8 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Bignor Roman Villa is about 1.7 miles north-west), access may need planning. For schools such as Bury CofE Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Why act early in Bury

Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. In a place like Bury, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
