Canopy cleaning in Breach

Common questions in Breach

Who inspects food businesses in Breach?

Kitchens in Breach are inspected by Swale council’s environmental health officers. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Breach during the holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 5 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Breach. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

Canopy cleaning is part of TR19, not the whole of it. Your report lists exactly what was cleaned, so your records stay accurate.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

We clean canopies in commercial kitchens of every kind. The routine stays the same whatever the kitchen, with the equipment off and cool.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

Is Breach in your area?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, Breach included.

How much notice should we give?

The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

Canopy cleaning in Breach

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. The work covers grease gutters, wall canopies and plenum chambers, and common reasons people get in touch are a filter housing caked in grease and a sticky, discoloured canopy.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Between visits

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:

  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill

After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

What your team can do, and what needs us

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

Grease, kitchens and Breach

Sea air reaches Breach, which sits within about 3 miles of the coast. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. Food Standards Agency records list about 5 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 4 sandwich bars and takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Breach. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Breach is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Newington Church of England Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. For kitchens close to Newington station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

Breach is about 3 miles east of Gillingham, in Kent. Breach gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with pictures. Breach is one of 922 places in Kent where we work for commercial clients. We also work in Maidstone, about 9 miles from Breach.

All of ME9 is within our area for canopy cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Close by, we work in Newington (1 mile south-east), Lower Hartlip (1 mile south-west), Lower Halstow (1 mile north-east), Upchurch (1 mile north) and Moor Street (1 mile west). Within a short drive, we also cover Maidstone (9 miles south-west), Sittingbourne (4 miles east), Gravesend (13 miles west), Faversham (11 miles east), Northfleet (14 miles west) and Minster (8 miles north-east).

What canopy cleaning cannot fix

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers

Why it’s worth doing now in Breach

Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. In a place like Breach, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You will have a fixed price before any work starts.

What we do, step by step

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the canopy cleaning, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a few hours for most canopies. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Breach, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after photos go into your report.

How to prepare

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

For landlords and multi-site operators

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Kent. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Breach?

Grease doesn’t build up any differently in Breach: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Medway Maritime Hospital about 5 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • Whether they recommend a next date
