Canopy cleaning in Borstal

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include heavy deposits behind the grease filters and filters that clog soon after cleaning, on canopy light fittings, plenum chambers and baffle filters.

Around a smaller place like Borstal, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What staff can safely do

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.

What a clean won’t put right

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • A light fitting that does not work

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What the work covers

  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies

Kitchen extracts in Borstal

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 30 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 4 hotels and guest houses within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Borstal. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. It’s Medway council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Borstal. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Borstal is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Matthew's or elsewhere in Borstal, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St. Catherine's Hospital about 1.1 miles north-east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Borstal?

Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. Left to fill up, they spill over, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Borstal (Temple Manor is about 1 mile north), fitting access panels needs care.

Our hiring checklist

Part by part

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. The joint between canopy and wall is a common grease trap, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

What happens on the day

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. We plan the journey to Borstal and bring what the job is likely to need.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Related advice

Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Never run the range with a filter out

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Multi-site and managed buildings

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with photos.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
