About our canopy cleaning in Borough Green
Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is typically in a worse state. Canopy cleaning deals with both, so the hood looks right and works properly. The work covers island canopies, grease gutters and wall canopies, and common reasons people get in touch are overflowing grease troughs and gutters and heavy deposits behind the grease filters.
In a smaller place like Borough Green, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Different parts, different methods
School and staff canteen kitchens
Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. BESA guidance still sets a minimum interval for the whole system, and the canopy is part of it.
Plenums and filter housings
The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. It catches whatever gets past the filters, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.
Canopy cleaning around Borough Green
Food Standards Agency records include about 11 pubs and bars across Borough Green and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Environmental health officers from Tonbridge and Malling council inspect food businesses in Borough Green. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Borough Green is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Borough Green Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. If you cook for passing trade around Borough Green & Wrotham station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Sevenoaks Hospital about 4.9 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Borough Green is about 5 miles east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. From the centre of Borough Green to the outskirts, we cover canopy cleaning for every kind of premises, from small sites to large estates. Our Kent coverage runs to 922 places, and Borough Green is one of them. Maidstone is in our area too, about 10 miles from Borough Green.

Why deal with it now?
Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. It’s better to plan the work at a site near Borough Green than wait for a failure.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.
Why book with us
- We are fully insured
- CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
- Each visit written up, with photos
- We diagnose before we treat
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It does not solve:
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
Parts of the system we cover
- Grease gutters
- Canopy light fittings
- Wall canopies
- Plenum chambers
- Baffle filters
- Island canopies
How it works
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Your opening hours decide when we come to Borough Green, not ours.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Clean filters are refitted and before and after photos go into your report.
Before we arrive
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
Getting a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

What affects the quote in Borough Green
Sites vary more than people expect. The main factors:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
Asking for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Problems your staff have spotted
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
Borough Green: your questions answered
Which environmental health team covers Borough Green?
The local authority for Borough Green is Tonbridge and Malling council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
Do you work overnight in Borough Green?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?
Canopy cleaning is part of TR19, not the whole of it. Your report lists exactly what was cleaned so nobody mistakes it for a full system clean.
Are you insured?
Yes. We carry full insurance, and we’ve been trading since 2009.
How long does canopy cleaning take?
One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. You will know before work begins.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before any work starts.
What happens to the waste?
We take it away at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.
Aftercare tips
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Give the canopy a wipe after service
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. It reflects how long the kitchen cooks and how much grease we removed, in line with BESA guidance.
Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
