What affects the quote in Berwick

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • The size of the system
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

The cost depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

What we need to know

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it

Need a price for canopy cleaning? Please give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

About our canopy cleaning in Berwick

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers wall canopies, grease gutters and baffle filters, and common reasons people get in touch are a hood coated in old grease and poor capture at the hood.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Check all filters are fitted before service

Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

How the job changes from site to site

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, which means grease settles on all four sides. We clean all of them, inside and out.

Grease troughs and gutters

Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. Cleaning it clears the drip.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across East Sussex. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.

When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning won’t do:

  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters

FAQs for Berwick

Will you come out to Berwick?

Yes. Berwick is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Which environmental health team covers Berwick?

Food hygiene inspections in Berwick are carried out by Wealden council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. That’s generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you are not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?

The whole canopy, inside and out. The plenum behind the filters is included because that’s often the dirtiest part.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What should I send you?

Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. Then phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

Berwick, about 47 miles from central London, is within our usual area. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, so the visit fits around the site. It’s Wealden council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Berwick. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

How it works

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Berwick before we set off.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
