Canopy cleaning in Appleton, done properly

Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. If you have a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and a hood coated in old grease, we can put it right.

In a small place like Appleton, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

The process

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. The timing of a visit to Appleton is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Getting a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price, before any work starts.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Questions from Appleton

Do you work overnight in Appleton?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Appleton keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Appleton?

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Appleton. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

Typically because the troughs or gutters are full, or the plenum is overloaded. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.

What’s TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.

How far ahead should we book?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

What accreditations do you have?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we are fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site

Wall canopies

A wall-mounted canopy runs along the back of the range. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, so we clean along it as well as the inner skin.

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. A thorough clean puts that right.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools

The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Every filter is refitted and checked, and the kitchen is ready to cook.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

How we price canopy cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • The size of the system
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The times the site is available
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before we start.

What to send for a quote

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Canopy cleaning in Appleton: the local picture

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Appleton. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Appleton Church of England (A) Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Lawrence or elsewhere in Appleton, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Appleton Manor is about 0.1 miles east), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.

What canopy cleaning cannot fix

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so here are the limits:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • Bent or broken filters
