How we handle canopy cleaning in Albury

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. Typical jobs include drips from the canopy onto the range and condensation and grease dripping together, across canopy light fittings, baffle filters and wall canopies.

Somewhere as small as Albury, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

What we do, step by step

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Albury before we set off.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

How to get a quote

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before any work starts.

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Plenums and filter housings

The rails and channels that hold the filters collect grease. Clean housings let the filters seat properly and leave no gaps.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Albury?

Grease doesn’t build up any differently in Albury: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.

Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning

Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Albury is Herts and Essex Hospital, about 4.9 miles south-east.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed

Honest limits

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What the work covers

Albury kitchens: local notes

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs within about 1.5 miles of central Albury. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. In Albury, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from East Hertfordshire council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Fire safety in Albury falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Mary or anywhere around Albury, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Much Hadham Palace is about 3.6 miles south), access may need planning.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Albury

Can the work in Albury be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. That way a site in Albury does not have to lose a day’s trading. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Albury?

That is East Hertfordshire council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Albury. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Who is the responsible person?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and where several people have control, each can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

Will I get a report after the canopy clean?

A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.

Between visits

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

The best thing a kitchen can do for its canopy is keep the filters clean. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and never cook with one missing. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.

Why act early in Albury

Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
