Questions from Hay Street
Can the work in Hay Street be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. Your customers, staff or residents in Hay Street needn’t be disturbed. When you call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, mention when the site is quiet.
Can you get to a site in Hay Street?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Hay Street is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
What causes grease to drip from the hood?
Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No, not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, as well as food production and leisure sites.
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
Which accreditations do you hold?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.
What do you do to protect the area?
By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.
Canopy cleaning in Hay Street
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers grease gutters, plenum chambers and baffle filters, and common reasons people get in touch are greasy streaks across the canopy and canopy gutters full of old fat.
Somewhere as small as Hay Street, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What we do, step by step
Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Hay Street, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.
Preparing for the visit
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
Ask for a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before any work starts.
Advice
Why deal with it now?
A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. The kitchen gets hotter and smokier, and the fan works harder for less. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. If the system at a site near Hay Street fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

How we price canopy cleaning
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Parking and loading at the site
- What state the system is in
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
Multi-site and managed buildings
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
Aftercare tips
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.
Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
Grease, kitchens and Hay Street
The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs in and around Hay Street, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Environmental health officers from East Hertfordshire council inspect food businesses in Hay Street. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. The fire and rescue service for Hay Street is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Hay Street (Much Hadham Palace is about 4.7 miles south-east), fitting access panels needs care. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin or elsewhere in Hay Street, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Around Hay Street
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Adam And Eve Public House and the streets around them. Nearby you’ll also find Brent Pelham (3.7 miles north-east).
Signs you need canopy cleaning in Hay Street
Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
These are the problems we see most often:
- An EHO comment about the canopy
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
For schools such as Jenyns First School and Nursery, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

What the work involves, part by part
Grease troughs and gutters
Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. We empty and degrease them, so they can do their job again.
Plenums and filter housings
The rails and channels that hold the filters collect grease. Clean housings let the filters seat properly and leave no gaps.
