TR19 inspection across Woolhampton

About our TR19 inspection in Woolhampton

BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: heavy use (12 to 16 hours a day) every 3 months, moderate use (6 to 12 hours) every 6 months and light use (2 to 6 hours) every 12 months. Those are minimums, and grease readings help set the real interval. Common call-outs are for parts of the system left out of past cleans and kitchens whose menu or hours have changed, on access surveys, wet film thickness tests and post-clean checks.

In a village or hamlet like Woolhampton, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What a clean won’t put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • Fan breakdowns, which need a repair visit
  • Parts of the duct nobody can reach yet
  • The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Insurer audits
  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Access surveys
  • Post-clean checks
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Deposit thickness tests

How it works

A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Visits to a village like Woolhampton are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.

  1. Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
  2. The same access points are opened up.
  3. We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
  4. Photos are taken to show the condition after the clean.
  5. We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Advice

Woolhampton questions

Do you cover smaller places like Woolhampton?

Yes, Woolhampton is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Who inspects food businesses in Woolhampton?

Kitchens in Woolhampton are inspected by West Berkshire council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

At what point does grease need cleaning?

TR19® Grease says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere at 500 microns or more needs spot cleaning right away.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® is not law; it’s BESA’s specification. The law is the Fire Safety Order 2005, under which the responsible person must manage fire risk, and insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark.

Can you work evenings and weekends?

Yes. Give us your opening hours with your enquiry and we’ll book around them.

What is TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Some pictures and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. We will ask for anything else we need.

What accreditations do you have?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

When to call us in Woolhampton

As hot, greasy air travels up the duct, it cools and leaves a film behind. It often collects where nobody can see it: the plenum, bends and horizontal runs.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Missing TR19 certificates or history
  • An insurer’s request for a TR19 audit
  • Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed
  • Extracts that have never been grease tested

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Peter, or anywhere in Woolhampton, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded

Multi-site and managed buildings

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Woolhampton kitchens: local notes

Woolhampton, about 47 miles from central London, is within our usual area. A survey and a fixed quote come first, then the visit at a time that suits you. Environmental health officers from West Berkshire council inspect food businesses in Woolhampton. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

A hospital like West Berkshire Community Hospital, about 5 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. If you cook for passing trade around Midgham station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

Different parts, different methods

Vertical risers

Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease can drain down and pool at the bottom, so we check there.

Canopy and plenum

Filters can look fine while the plenum behind them is heavily coated. That’s why we test behind them.

Why it’s worth doing now in Woolhampton

If a kitchen in Woolhampton has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Measured readings let a competent person set the interval. Planning a trip to Woolhampton ahead is easier for everyone than a rushed one.

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
