TR19 inspection for sites in Wix

How we handle TR19 inspection in Wix

BESA’s minimum cleaning frequencies depend on how long the kitchen cooks each day: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Grease testing shows whether your kitchen needs cleaning more often than that. If you’re dealing with insurers asking for TR19 evidence and sites with gaps in their extract records, we can help, from post-clean checks, wet film thickness tests and access surveys onwards.

Somewhere as small as Wix, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after each visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Do you need TR19 inspection in Wix?

You can’t judge grease thickness by eye. A system can look clean at the filters and be heavily coated further in, so readings are the reliable guide.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
  • Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
  • Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
  • Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean

Historic houses near Wix, such as Thorpe Hall about 4.3 miles south, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether VAT is included
  • What hours they’ll be on site
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Why deal with it now?

Skipping grease testing leaves the cleaning interval to guesswork. Any reading of 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning under TR19® Grease, which you won’t know without measuring. If the system at a site near Wix fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Common questions in Wix

Who inspects food businesses in Wix?

The local authority for Wix is Tendring council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Which fire service covers Wix?

That is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

How far ahead should we book?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We typically quote within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

How do you protect the area?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

How do you measure grease in a kitchen extract?

Grease thickness testing measures the layer of grease on the duct surfaces, by WFTT or DTT. The results are given in microns.

Are you accredited?

We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Often, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we can’t see enough, we arrange a survey.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What TR19 inspection cannot fix

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • Removing the grease, which is a separate clean

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think before you book.

What the work covers

  • Post-clean checks
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Access surveys
  • Insurer audits
  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Deposit thickness tests

Kitchen extracts in Wix

Sea air reaches Wix, which sits within about 3 miles of the coast. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. Kitchens in Wix get their food hygiene inspections from Tendring council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. The fire and rescue service for Wix is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in Wix, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. School kitchens, at schools like Wix and Wrabness Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • What state the system is in
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Site rules, permits and inductions

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

To get a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

The process

Each visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the TR19 inspection, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Somewhere as small as Wix, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. First we book a time that won’t disrupt cooking.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
  4. We photograph the test points and record any sections we cannot reach.
  5. You get a report with readings, pictures and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Ask for a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Advice

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

Risers can be hard to get into. The survey shows exactly what access there is.

Canopy and plenum

Clean-looking filters do not mean a clean plenum. So we measure behind the filters, not just in front.

For landlords and multi-site operators

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.
