TR19 inspection in Walsworth
BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Grease testing shows whether your kitchen needs cleaning more often than that. Typical jobs include cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen and post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean, on insurer audits, pre-clean surveys and post-clean checks.
For a smaller kitchen near Walsworth, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What we’re called out for in Walsworth
Kitchens change: a new menu, longer hours or more frying can all add grease. A cleaning interval set years ago may no longer fit.
What we are most often called out for:
- Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed
- Sites with gaps in their extract records
- Checking the result of a recent clean
- Parts of the system left out of past cleans
School kitchens, at schools like Highover Junior Mixed and Infant School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels
We test between services, early in the morning or after close so the kitchen keeps cooking.
Extract fan and discharge
The extract fan and its housing collect grease too. They’re included in the readings and pictures.
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by TR19 inspection, and we will tell you before we start. It does not solve:
- Hidden runs that need access panels first
- Heavy deposits found on test, which still need cleaning
- Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before you book.
What the work covers
- Insurer audits
- Pre-clean surveys
- Deposit thickness tests
- Access surveys
- Wet film thickness tests
- Post-clean checks
How the visit works
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Everything the job in Walsworth needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.
- Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
- We open the access points used on the clean.
- We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
- We photograph each area to record how it was left.
- We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
Get a fixed quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with photos.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Looking after it afterwards
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Have the latest report ready for insurance renewals
- Book the next test on the date in the report
- Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
- Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly
Where sections couldn’t be reached, the report says where access panels would help. With panels fitted, the next clean can cover every section.
Clean, correctly fitted filters stop more grease reaching the duct. Gaps around filters let grease get past them.
What TR19 inspection looks like in Walsworth
Look up Walsworth on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 97 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 37 sandwich bars and takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Walsworth. Kitchens like these cook for very different hours, and grease testing shows which extracts need cleaning soonest. Fire safety in Walsworth falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Walsworth, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from North Hertfordshire council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
Commuter trade near Hitchin station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. A hospital like Lister Hospital, about 2.9 miles south-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
Walsworth is about 1 mile north-east of Hitchin, in Hertfordshire. Whatever kind of site you run in Walsworth, we can take on TR19 inspection. We can work out of hours so the site keeps running. Walsworth questions
Who is the fire and rescue service for Walsworth?
Walsworth is in the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Do you work in villages like Walsworth?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Walsworth included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few photos and any previous report.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Every job is surveyed first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. Then you get a fixed quote.
How often should grease be tested?
Enough to be sure grease stays within the TR19® Grease figures between cleans. If readings rise, the interval should shorten.
What happens on a pre-clean survey?
We survey, measure and photograph the system first. The survey can be done from pictures and details or on site, whichever suits the system.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
