How we handle TR19 inspection in Preston
Under TR19® Grease, the mean grease thickness should stay at or below 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. Testing is how you know where your system stands. Typical jobs include checking the result of a recent clean and systems that need surveying before cleaning, across insurer audits, wet film thickness tests and post-clean checks.
Size does not change the work: a kitchen in a place like Preston gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What the work involves, part by part
Extract fan and discharge
Grease builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. We check and test them as part of the inspection.
Vertical risers
Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease can run down and collect at the base, so the base is a key test point.
Do you need TR19 inspection in Preston?
You cannot judge grease thickness by eye. Clean filters can hide a heavy layer behind them, which is why readings matter.
Common reasons sites call us include:
- Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
- Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed
- Parts of the system left out of past cleans
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
Commuter trade near Preston Park station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.
What to look for in a quote
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- Whether the price is fixed
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
Questions from Preston
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Preston out of term?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. There are about 55 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Preston. You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the dates the site is empty.
Which council inspects kitchens in Preston?
The local authority for Preston is Brighton and Hove council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.
What is grease thickness testing?
The Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) and Deposit Thickness Test (DTT) measure how thick the grease is at a given point. Readings are taken at set points through the system.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
How much does TR19 inspection cost?
We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before we start.
Can you inspect our extract for our insurance company?
Yes. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection, and our audit gives a clear record of the system’s condition, with recommendations where something needs doing.
How long does a TR19 inspection take?
An inspection takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Large or multiple systems take longer, so ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will plan it.
Honest limits
In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:
- Sections with no access, until panels are fitted
- Fan breakdowns, which need a repair visit
- Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What happens if it’s left?
After an incident, an insurer can ask to see proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection. Without them, a claim can be reduced or refused. Getting an inspection done now starts that paper trail. A quieter site near Preston still needs its system looked after.
Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we’ll price it together.

Between visits
Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Flag oily drips near the extract
- Diary the next grease test and clean
- Share inspection reports with your insurer or broker when asked
- Keep access panels clear and unpainted
After post-clean verification, file the results with the cleaning certificate. Together they show the system was cleaned and checked.
Keep all TR19 records together so you can produce them quickly.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
How the visit works
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the TR19 inspection, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. For a site near Preston, the work is booked around your opening hours, evenings and weekends included.
- After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
- The same access points are opened up.
- Grease readings are taken again at set points.
- Photos are taken to show the condition after the clean.
- The results are reported, with anything missed flagged.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Clear the space around the work

Preston kitchens: local notes
The coast is only about 2 miles from Preston. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency records list about 351 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 93 sandwich bars and takeaways in Preston and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Each kitchen extract among them can be measured for grease to set the right cleaning interval. Preston is covered by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Montefiore Hospital is the nearest hospital to Preston, about 1 mile south.
