How we handle TR19 inspection in Havering's Grove

BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Those are minimums, and grease readings help set the real interval. We’re often asked to deal with kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings and post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean, on pre-clean surveys, deposit thickness tests and post-clean checks.

In a small place like Havering's Grove, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

TR19 inspection around Havering's Grove

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 4 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 8 takeaways in and around Havering's Grove, up to about a mile and a half out. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Havering's Grove sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. It’s Basildon council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Havering's Grove. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Mayflower Community Hospital (about 1 mile south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Havering's Grove (Ingatestone Hall is about 2.4 miles north), fitting access panels needs care.

FAQs for Havering's Grove

Is Havering's Grove within the area you cover?

Yes, Havering's Grove is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Who inspects food businesses in Havering's Grove?

That’s Basildon council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Havering's Grove. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Which accreditations do you hold?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Is TR19 cleaning the law?

No. TR19® is a specification, not a statute. Without TR19 records, an insurance claim can be reduced or refused, so following it is the sensible course.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

How often should a kitchen extract be inspected?

That varies with the kitchen’s daily use. BESA’s minimum cleaning intervals are every 3, 6 or 12 months for heavy, moderate and light use, and testing shows if your kitchen needs more.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

What staff can safely do

If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Why act early in Havering's Grove

Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Ignored, the layer only gets thicker. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Havering's Grove before we set off.

  1. Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
  2. We open the access points used on the clean.
  3. We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
  4. We photograph each area to record how it was left.
  5. The results are reported, with anything missed flagged.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

How to get a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

Advice

When to call us in Havering's Grove

You cannot judge grease thickness by eye. A system can look clean at the filters and be heavily coated further in, which is why readings matter.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits
  • Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
  • Checking the result of a recent clean
  • Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of All Saints or anywhere around Havering's Grove, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

What your quote should include

  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

Questions to ask before booking

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Between visits

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Never cook with filters missing
  • Keep to the recommended interval
  • Report grease dripping from the canopy
  • Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly

You get a report with the grease readings, where they were taken and pictures of each point. Keep it with your fire safety and TR19 records.

Test grease regularly instead of relying on the calendar. It spots changes in how fast grease builds.
