Your questions about TR19 inspection in Ditchling
Can you come to Ditchling after we close?

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Ditchling?
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Ditchling. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
What do you do to protect the area?
We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
What is TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
Is a quote from photos possible?
Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, and the quote follows that.
What does a pre-clean survey involve?
We survey, measure and photograph the system first. We can work from photos and details, or visit, as suits the job.
What is post-clean verification?
Verification means repeat readings and pictures once the clean is done. Any areas that weren’t cleaned properly are flagged.
TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Ditchling
BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: heavy use (12 to 16 hours a day) every 3 months, moderate use (6 to 12 hours) every 6 months and light use (2 to 6 hours) every 12 months. Those are minimums, and grease readings help set the real interval. Common call-outs are for systems that need surveying before cleaning and missing TR19 certificates or history, across post-clean checks, deposit thickness tests and insurer audits.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Signs you need TR19 inspection in Ditchling
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers look to TR19® as the benchmark. TR19® itself is not law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and grease in the extract is part of that risk.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Sections of duct that cannot be reached
- Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
- An insurer’s request for a TR19 audit
- Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
For schools such as Ditchling (St Margaret's) Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
What your quote should include
- If they look at the system before pricing
- What paperwork you get at the end
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
How the job changes from site to site
Restaurants, pubs and hotels
BESA’s minimum for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day is a clean every 3 months, with testing showing whether more is needed.
Extract fan and discharge
A greasy fan works harder and wears faster. Readings show if it needs attention before the next clean.

TR19 inspection around Ditchling
There are about 10 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 3 takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Ditchling, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. Kitchens in Ditchling get their food hygiene inspections from Lewes council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service covers Ditchling. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Ditchling Unitarian Chapel, or anywhere in Ditchling, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like The Dene Hospital about 3.8 miles north-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

What a clean won’t put right
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Mechanical faults in the extract
- Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
- The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Leave it or put it right?
If there’s a fire or a claim, your insurer may ask for TR19 records. Without them, a claim can be reduced or refused. Getting an inspection done now starts that paper trail. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What your team can do, and what needs us
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
The process
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Somewhere as small as Ditchling, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
- We open the access points used on the clean.
- We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
- We photograph each area to record how it was left.
- The results are reported, with anything missed flagged.
Before we arrive
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
How to get a quote
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To get going, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
