How we handle TR19 inspection in Chappel

Grease thickness testing tells you how much grease is sitting in the canopy, ducts and fan. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). The results show whether the system needs cleaning and how soon. If you’re dealing with insurers asking for TR19 evidence and extracts that have never been grease tested, we can help.

Somewhere as small as Chappel, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

The process

There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Chappel.

  1. After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
  2. We open the access points used on the clean.
  3. Grease readings are taken again at set points.
  4. We photograph each area to record how it was left.
  5. We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.

How we price TR19 inspection

There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • How easy every part is to reach

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Helping us quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

If you need TR19 inspection in Chappel, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. We usually send a fixed quote within one working day.

What a clean will not put right

We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Sections with no access, until panels are fitted
  • Fan breakdowns, which need a repair visit
  • Removing the grease, which is a separate clean

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

When to call us in Chappel

Records can go missing when a business changes hands or contractors. Without them, nobody knows how much grease is in the system or when it was last cleaned.

The symptoms we are asked about most include:

  • Heavy grease suspected in the plenum or ducts
  • Sites with gaps in their extract records
  • Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
  • Insurers asking for TR19 evidence

If you cook for passing trade around Chappel & Wakes Colne station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

Before booking anyone

  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • What paperwork you get at the end

Our hiring checklist

Chappel: your questions answered

Which environmental health team covers Chappel?

In Chappel, it’s Colchester council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Do you cover smaller places like Chappel?

Yes, Chappel is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you verify a clean after it’s been done?

A post-clean check records grease readings and photos after the work, whoever did the clean.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that cannot wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

Will you produce a report for our insurer?

Yes. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection, and our audit gives a clear record of the system’s condition, along with any actions needed.

What is TR19?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What accreditations do you have?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

Can you price the work without visiting?

In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.

Keeping the system healthy

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
  • Keep access panels clear and unpainted
  • Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
  • Diary the next grease test and clean

After the inspection, we send a report showing each reading, its location and photos. File it alongside your TR19 certificates.

Test grease regularly instead of relying on the calendar. It spots changes in how fast grease builds.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Leave it or put it right?

A pre-clean survey avoids surprises on the night. Access problems are spotted in advance rather than on the night, so the clean covers the whole system. In a place like Chappel, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are unsure, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What TR19 inspection looks like in Chappel

There are about 3 restaurants, cafés and canteens in and around Chappel, up to about a mile and a half out, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service covers Chappel. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. In Chappel, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Colchester council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Halstead Hospital about 5.3 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Chappel Church of England Controlled Primary School or anywhere near Chappel, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Chappel is about 5 miles east of Halstead, in Essex. We provide TR19 inspection for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Chappel and the rest of Essex. We cover 644 places across Essex, from busy centres to quieter spots. There’s also a page for Chelmsford, about 17 miles away.
