TR19 inspection in Bankside

TR19 inspection in Bankside, done properly

Under TR19® Grease, the mean grease thickness should stay at or below 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. Testing is how you know where your system stands. If you have systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements and kitchens whose menu or hours have changed, we can help.

In a London area like Bankside, a kitchen extract often passes through shared space on its way out: a riser, a service void, the floors above. A duct fire there can reach parts of the building far from the range, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

How the job changes from site to site

Horizontal duct runs

Sections without access are recorded so it can be fixed before the clean.

Vertical risers

In buildings with several floors, the riser may pass through other tenants’ space, so we arrange access ahead of time.

TR19 inspection in Bankside: the local picture

The FSA’s data shows about 512 pubs, bars and clubs and about 129 hotels and guest houses registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Bankside. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Overnight is the normal time to clean a London kitchen extract, so trading is not affected. Environmental health officers from the City of London Corporation inspect food businesses in Bankside. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Where a hall near St Mary Mounthaw, or anywhere in Bankside, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. School kitchens, at schools like London Nautical School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

The process

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. If your building in Bankside has sign-in rules, permits or key holders, mention them when you book.

  1. First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
  2. The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
  3. Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.

How to prepare

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use

Getting a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

What staff can safely do

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
  • The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
  • Sections with no access, until panels are fitted

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

What happens if it’s left?

Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Left alone, grease keeps building between cleans. In a London building, a problem in a duct, damper or fan rarely stays in one unit.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

Do you need TR19 inspection in Bankside?

You can’t judge grease thickness by eye. Clean filters can hide a heavy layer behind them, so readings are the reliable guide.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • An insurer’s request for a TR19 audit
  • Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
  • Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
  • Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed

A kitchen near London Blackfriars station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

Before you book anyone

  • What insurance they carry
  • What records you will receive afterwards
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether a survey comes first

Questions to ask before you book

Bankside: your questions answered

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Bankside during the holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. With about 78 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Bankside, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will fit the work in.

Can you work in Bankside outside opening hours?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The work in Bankside can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.

Will you produce a report for our insurer?

Yes. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection, and an audit report gives you that, along with any actions needed.

What accreditations do you have?

We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

How often should a kitchen extract be inspected?

It depends on how heavily the kitchen cooks. BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals of 3, 6 or 12 months by daily use, and testing shows if your kitchen needs more.

How long does a TR19 inspection take?

Expect it to take anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. We fit it around when the kitchen is closed or quiet.

How do you measure grease in a kitchen extract?

The Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) and Deposit Thickness Test (DTT) measure how thick the grease is at a given point. We take readings at set points from canopy to fan.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
