How we handle TR19 inspection in Abbey Field
Insurance policies often require evidence of TR19® cleaning and inspection. Without it, a claim can be refused or reduced. Our TR19 audits give sites in Abbey Field and across Essex a clear record of the system’s condition. If you have an insurer’s request for a TR19 audit and cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen, we can put it right, from deposit thickness tests, access surveys and insurer audits onwards.
Size doesn’t change the work: a kitchen in a place like Abbey Field gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
What TR19 inspection looks like in Abbey Field
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 170 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 37 takeaways across Abbey Field and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Food hygiene inspections in Abbey Field are the job of Colchester council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Fire safety in Abbey Field falls to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Montgomery Junior School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Where a hall near St Michael's Church, or anywhere in Abbey Field, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

How the visit works
Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes an hour or two for a single kitchen, longer for a large or complex system. Evenings, weekends or a closed day all work for a site in a place like Abbey Field.
- First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
- The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
- We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
- We measure the grease and photograph each point.
- We report back with readings and a fixed quote.
Preparing for the visit
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
Get a fixed quote
We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
Advice
What happens if it’s left?
Skipping grease testing leaves the cleaning interval to guesswork. Any reading of 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning under TR19® Grease, which you will not know without measuring. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.
You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Common problems we fix in Abbey Field
Grease builds up as cooking vapour cools inside the extract. It often collects where nobody can see it: the plenum, bends and horizontal runs.
Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
- Extracts that have never been grease tested
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
- Missing TR19 certificates or history
A hospital like Essex County Hospital, about 1.2 miles north, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
Questions to ask before booking
- What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
- Whether the quote shows VAT
Your questions about TR19 inspection in Abbey Field
Do you work at weekends in Abbey Field?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Is Abbey Field within the area you cover?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Abbey Field included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.
Do you check other contractors’ cleans?
It’s an inspection after cleaning, to show what state the system was left in, for our cleans and other firms’ alike.
At what point does grease need cleaning?
Between cleans, the mean should stay at 200 microns or below, and anywhere at 500 microns or more needs spot cleaning right away.
Is a quote from pictures possible?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.
What does TR19 inspection cost?
The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Call for a fixed quote, normally ready within one working day.
Multi-site and managed buildings
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.
What TR19 inspection can’t fix
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- Hidden runs that need access panels first
- Heavy deposits found on test, which still need cleaning
- Design faults in the extract system
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think.

Different parts, different methods
Vertical risers
Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease can drain down and pool at the bottom, so we check there.
Horizontal duct runs
Sections without access are recorded so panels can be added.
