Kitchen extract cleaning in GU9: how it works
Every time food is cooked, warm vapour carries fat up into the extract. It cools inside the duct and settles as a sticky film that thickens month by month. That film is fuel, and cleaning the whole system is how you keep it under control. The work covers vertical risers, canopies and hoods and plenums and filters, and common reasons people get in touch are a new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history and cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey.
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the photos you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
- Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Kitchen extracts across GU9
Across GU9, from Farnham, Lower Bourne and Upper Hale outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
Much of our work across London and the South East happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so sites across GU9 do not have to lose a day.
Farnham: If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Joan of Arc's Church or elsewhere in Farnham, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. School kitchens, at schools like Farnham College for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
What happens if it’s left?
An overdue clean in GU9 is best dealt with now rather than after the next inspection. It takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system, and we work evenings, overnight and weekends so you do not lose a service. Waiting only adds grease and risk.

Ductwork and risers
Horizontal runs collect grease as the air slows and cools. We open access panels along the route and clean each section, recording any that can’t be reached.
Grease filters
Between TR19 cleans, filters still need regular cleaning and we offer a filter exchange service for that. Clean filters slow the build-up further down the system.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by kitchen extract cleaning, and we will tell you before work begins. It won’t put right:
- Fire dampers that won’t close (that needs damper testing and remedials)
- An undersized canopy or fan
- A grease trap that needs emptying
Why it fails
The reason for all this is fire. Flames from a pan or grill can be pulled into the canopy by the fan, where burning grease can carry a fire along the ducts and into other parts of the building. That is why controlling extract grease belongs in the fire risk assessment.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- An overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer
- Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
- A system with no record of a TR19 clean
- Grease smells coming from the extract
Common questions in GU9
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
We are members of Vent Hygiene Elite, the scheme run by BESCA, and we clean to BESA TR19® Grease. We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 too, and we’re fully insured.
How often does a kitchen extract system need cleaning?
That comes down mainly to daily cooking hours. Heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day calls for a clean at least every 3 months under BESA guidance, and lighter use less often. We’ll recommend a date after measuring the grease.
How do you protect the area?
Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.
Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?
TR19® itself isn’t law. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve dealt with extract grease.
How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?
Short systems are done in a few hours, but large systems may be spread over more than one visit. Your quote says how long to expect.
Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?
Because a dirty extract can spread a fire through a building. Many policies say the extract must be cleaned to TR19, and a claim may be reduced without proof, so keep every certificate.
