Kitchen extract cleaning in EC2Y: how it works

The canopy over the range is only the start of a kitchen extract system. Beyond the filters run the plenum, the ducts and risers, the fan and the point where air leaves the building, and each part collects grease. A TR19® Grease clean deals with the whole route, not only the parts on show. We’re often asked to deal with poor airflow at the canopy and an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19, across plenums and filters, extract fans and discharge points.

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, the work takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.

  1. We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
  3. With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
  4. Canopy, plenum, filters, duct runs, risers, fan and discharge are all cleaned to TR19® Grease.
  5. Readings and pictures are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.

Kitchen extracts across EC2Y

In EC2Y, a busy kitchen in a place such as EC2Y and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

From central London kitchens to coastal hotels and country pubs, London and the South East have every kind of site. Wherever the site is in EC2Y, the work is done to the same TR19® standard.

City of London: School kitchens, at schools like Fashion Retail Academy for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. A kitchen near London Cannon Street station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

Leave it or put it right?

If your kitchen in EC2Y is past its cleaning date, it’s worth booking now. It takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system, and we work evenings, overnight and weekends so you do not lose a service. Every extra month adds grease.

Questions to ask before booking

  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • Whether they’re fully insured

Multi-site and managed buildings

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Keep grease collection points emptied
  • Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate
  • Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
  • Switch the fan on before cooking starts

Every clean ends with a photo report. It shows the system before and after, part by part, and lists what was cleaned, any areas we couldn’t reach and the date the next clean is due.

Keep the fan on throughout service. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Signs you need kitchen extract cleaning

Grease filters are the first line of defence, and they’re often the weak point. Damaged, missing or overloaded filters let grease straight past, and from there it travels on to the fan.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Grease smells coming from the extract
  • A kitchen with no current TR19 certificate
  • Grease drips onto cooking equipment
  • Poor airflow at the canopy

Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in EC2Y

What types of premises do you cover?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

How much notice do you need?

For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.

Which parts of the extract do you clean?

The whole system: canopy inside and out, plenum, grease filters, ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Any part without access is noted.

What’s TR19?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

What do you do to protect the area?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

What do you need from me for a quote?

A short description and a few photos plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we will ask.

Can you quote from photos?

Often, yes. With good photos, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
