About our kitchen extract cleaning in Berkhamsted
Any kitchen we clean in Berkhamsted gets exactly the same specification as everywhere else we work. The job starts with a survey and grease readings, then works through canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, fan and discharge. At the finish there’s a TR19 certificate and a before and after photo report. If you have heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs and a kitchen taken over without any extract records, we can help. Searching for commercial kitchen extraction cleaning in Berkhamsted? We’ve been cleaning kitchen extracts across the South East since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member.
BESA sets minimum intervals by hours of cooking a day: 3-monthly for heavy use, 6-monthly for moderate use and yearly for light use, adjusted by what the grease readings show.
Most kitchens in a town like Berkhamsted cannot close for a day, so the work is done after service, overnight or on a closed day. By the next service, the kitchen is ready to cook in again.
Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit ends with a dated report and pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
How we price kitchen extract cleaning
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- The size of the system
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- The condition we find in the survey
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.
What to send for a quote
We can often survey from photos. Try to include:
- Any previous report or certificate
- A few general shots of the system
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Berkhamsted kitchens: local notes
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 44 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 13 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Berkhamsted. Every kitchen in that count with a canopy has a full extract system, canopy to discharge, to keep clear of grease. Berkhamsted sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Environmental health officers from Dacorum council inspect food businesses in Berkhamsted. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Berkhamsted, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Hemel Hempstead Hospital about 4.5 miles east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. For kitchens close to Berkhamsted station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

FAQs for Berkhamsted
Which environmental health team covers Berkhamsted?
In Berkhamsted, it’s Dacorum council that carries out food hygiene inspections. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Berkhamsted in the summer holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Food Standards Agency records list about 16 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Berkhamsted. You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the dates the site is empty.
Can you quote from photos?
Often, yes. With good pictures, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
What information do you need?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus photos of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
What accreditations do you hold?
We clean to BESA TR19® Grease as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.
Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?
Many insurers ask for proof of regular cleaning to TR19, and many policies require it. An insurer may refuse or reduce a claim if there’s no evidence, so it’s worth checking your policy wording.
What do you do with what you remove?
It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it does not spread.
What we do, step by step
We are used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system. Parking in a town like Berkhamsted is normally straightforward, so the main questions are access and timing.
- We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
- We measure the grease at set points along the system, then give you a fixed price.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- We test again, photograph the result and issue your TR19 certificate and photo report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
Getting a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before any work starts.

What happens if it’s left?
After a fire, one of the first questions is often when the extract was last cleaned. Many policies require cleaning to TR19, and an insurer can refuse or reduce a claim without proof. A current certificate is far easier to produce than an explanation. Nothing in a duct, damper or fan improves by being left.
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

How the job changes from site to site
Canopy and plenum
The plenum is out of sight behind the filters, so it’s easy to forget. We take the filters out and clean the plenum and housing thoroughly.
Ductwork and risers
Risers take the extract up through floors to roof level, and grease runs down their walls and pools at the base. Access panels along the riser let us clean it in sections.
What staff can safely do
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.
