About our grease trap cleaning in Upper Street

Grease trap cleaning keeps the drains running and the smells away. We empty the built-up grease and food solids and the chambers and baffles cleaned, and check the trap is working properly. Typical jobs include a blocked kitchen drain caused by grease and a kitchen drain that smells, on kitchen waste pipes, school and care home kitchens and restaurants and takeaways.

Somewhere as small as Upper Street, the kitchens that need a deep clean are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Wherever there is one, it needs its grease trap and hard-to-reach areas kept clean.

Each visit ends with a written report and photos, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What staff can safely do

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Upper Street kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records include about 3 pubs, bars and clubs across Upper Street and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Pub and hotel kitchens get the same build-up behind equipment and in the grease trap as any other. It’s New Forest council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Upper Street. The state of floors, drains and hard-to-reach corners all feeds into the inspection. A cleaning log that includes deep cleans and grease trap visits shows the work is planned.

Breamore House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses around Upper Street; event kitchens at places like that work in bursts, so a deep clean after a busy season helps. School kitchens, at schools like Breamore Church of England Primary School for example, usually have their deep cleans and grease trap work done while the canteen is closed.

Upper Street is in Hampshire. Upper Street gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. Questions from Upper Street

Can you work in Upper Street outside opening hours?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. Your customers, staff or residents in Upper Street needn’t be disturbed. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

Which environmental health team covers Upper Street?

In Upper Street, it’s New Forest council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Inspection results feed into the food hygiene rating published by the Food Standards Agency.

Why does a grease trap need regular cleaning?

An overfull trap lets grease into the drains. There it hardens on the pipe walls until they block. Regular cleaning prevents it.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

Can you clear our blocked drains as well?

A trap clean removes the grease in the trap, and can clear the problem where the trap was the cause. A blockage deeper in the drains needs a drainage specialist.

What paperwork should we keep on file?

Visit reports, certificates and your in-house cleaning logs. They’re what an insurer, fire officer or EHO may ask for, so keep them together and easy to find.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes an hour or two in most kitchens, depending on the size and condition of the trap. In a small place like Upper Street, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. We locate the trap and check how it’s fitted.
  2. Sinks feeding the trap are taken out of use.
  3. We empty out the fat, oil, grease and solids.
  4. The chambers and baffles are cleaned.
  5. The trap is refitted, tested with water and the waste taken away.

Looking after it afterwards

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Hot water only moves grease further down
  • Let us know if the kitchen gets busier
  • Report slow or smelly sinks early
  • Scrape plates and pans into the bin before washing up

Keep used oil out of the drains, and the trap will stay cleaner for longer. It makes a real difference.

If the kitchen has got busier, the trap fills faster. Shortening the cleaning interval now stops it overflowing.

When it’s something else

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • A leaking sink waste or trap connection
  • A unit that can’t cope with the kitchen’s output
  • Drains that are cracked or have collapsed

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • School and care home kitchens
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Pot wash sinks
  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Kitchen waste pipes
  • Inline grease traps

What the work involves, part by part

Grease interceptors

An interceptor works on the same principle as a smaller trap. Cooling water lets grease rise and solids settle.

Baffles and outlets

Clean water leaves through the outlet. A blocked outlet stops the trap working.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Signs you need grease trap cleaning in Upper Street

Every pan and plate washed sends grease towards the drain. In the trap, they cool and separate and the grease layer grows.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • A blocked kitchen drain caused by grease
  • Gurgling drains in the kitchen
  • A small trap that fills too quickly
  • A full, neglected grease trap

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Salisbury District Hospital (about 5.5 miles north), cook for long hours, so deep cleans and grease trap work are planned around patients’ meals.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
