Grease trap cleaning for sites in The Burroughs

Grease trap cleaning in The Burroughs, done properly

A grease trap catches fats, oils and grease from the kitchen sinks before they reach the drain. As the waste water cools, the grease floats and stays in the trap while the water carries on to the drain. Eventually it fills and has to be emptied and cleaned. If you have a routine grease trap service and washing-up water that won’t drain away, we can put it right.

London’s sewers are known for fatbergs, built up from fat, oil and grease washed down drains. A grease trap that is emptied and cleaned regularly keeps fat out of the drains.

We’ve been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Signs you need grease trap cleaning in The Burroughs

For a kitchen in The Burroughs or anywhere else, the trap is out of sight and out of mind. Tucked away under the sink or below the floor, it’s often ignored until something goes wrong.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A regular cleaning plan for the grease trap
  • A kitchen drain that smells
  • Drains that gurgle and bubble
  • Grease setting in the kitchen pipework

For a café close to Hendon station, a deep clean can be done between closing and the morning rush.

What your quote should include

  • Whether VAT is included
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether the price is fixed
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Keeping the system healthy

Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Book trap cleans at a set interval
  • Keep waste oil out of the drains
  • Don’t store things on top of the trap
  • Tell us when sinks start draining slowly

The sinks are ready to use as soon as we’ve finished. We run water through to check it drains before we leave.

Fat that escapes the trap hardens in the pipework. Once it’s there, it needs a drainage contractor to clear so prevention is the easier route.

What a clean won’t put right

Not every problem is solved by grease trap cleaning, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It will not put right:

  • Sewer problems outside the premises
  • Grease deep in the drains, which needs jetting by a drainage contractor
  • A unit that cannot cope with the kitchen’s output

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Inline grease traps
  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Pot wash sinks
  • School and care home kitchens
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Kitchen waste pipes

How the job changes from site to site

Grease interceptors

A larger unit takes more time to empty and clean and we plan the visit accordingly.

Restaurant and takeaway kitchens

Visits are booked when the sinks aren’t in use so the kitchen isn’t disrupted.

How the visit works

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes anything from under an hour to a few hours, depending on the trap. In The Burroughs, as across London, we usually work overnight or at weekends and hand the site back ready to open.

  1. First, we locate the grease trap and look at the pipework around it.
  2. The sinks feeding the trap are kept out of use while we work.
  3. The trap is emptied of grease and food waste.
  4. We clean the chambers, baffles and connections.
  5. Once it’s refitted, water is run through to check it drains, and we take the waste with us.

Before we arrive

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Grease trap cleaning around The Burroughs

The Food Standards Agency lists about 22 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 6 hotels and B&Bs as registered food businesses within about 1.5 miles of central The Burroughs. Wherever they cook, the kitchen and its drains need the same attention as a restaurant’s. Night work is normal for London kitchens, and the kitchen is handed back ready for the morning. Kitchens in The Burroughs get their food hygiene inspections from Barnet council. The state of floors, drains and hard-to-reach corners all feeds into the inspection. Having the dates of the last deep clean to hand saves digging for them on the day.

For schools such as St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, deep cleans and grease trap work are usually booked for the holidays. St Andrew's Hospital, about 1.9 miles south, is the nearest hospital to The Burroughs; healthcare kitchens can’t stop cooking, so deep cleans are worked around meal times.

What staff can safely do

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

Your questions about grease trap cleaning in The Burroughs

Can school kitchens in The Burroughs be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 43 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of The Burroughs. You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us with the dates the site is empty.

Do you work overnight in The Burroughs?

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Why does a grease trap need regular cleaning?

Once it’s full, grease passes straight through. It then sets in the drains, causing blockages and smells, and can add to fatbergs in the sewer.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. We always survey first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.
