Your questions about grease trap cleaning in Stockwell

Can you work in school kitchens in Stockwell during the holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 70 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Stockwell. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Do you work at weekends in Stockwell?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The work in Stockwell can fit around your hours. When you phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, mention when the site is quiet.

How much notice should we give?

Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

How do you protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

Do you clean under-sink and inline grease traps?

Under-sink units, inline traps and interceptors are all covered. Let us know what’s fitted and we’ll plan around it.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always survey first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not usually. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.

Grease trap cleaning in Stockwell

A grease trap is the kitchen drain’s first line of protection. Kept clean, it does its job quietly, but neglected, it causes blockages and smells. A regular clean keeps it healthy. We’re often asked to deal with gurgling from the sink waste and a small trap that fills too quickly, across kitchen waste pipes, under-sink grease traps and pot wash sinks.

Fat, oil and grease poured down drains helps form fatbergs, and London’s sewers have made the news for them more than once. A grease trap that’s emptied and cleaned regularly keeps fat out of the drains.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: a dated account with pictures of everything we did. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, ready for your insurer.

Signs you need grease trap cleaning in Stockwell

A full trap can’t hold any more grease. It then builds up in the drains and the sewer beyond, where it can form blockages.

The symptoms we are asked about most include:

  • A full, neglected grease trap
  • Scheduled grease trap emptying
  • Gurgling from the sink waste
  • An under-sink trap that keeps filling up

If you run a kitchen near Brixton station with long trading hours, grease builds up faster behind equipment and in the trap.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours

Our hiring checklist

What grease trap cleaning can’t fix

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Leaking pipework or sink wastes, which need a plumber
  • Broken pipework below ground
  • A unit that cannot cope with the kitchen’s output

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Pot wash sinks
  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Inline grease traps
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Kitchen waste pipes
  • School and care home kitchens

The process

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the photos you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes an hour or two in most kitchens, depending on the size and condition of the trap. Loading bays, visitor permits and roof access are the first things we ask about for a site in Stockwell.

  1. First, we find the trap and look at its connections.
  2. Sinks feeding the trap are taken out of use.
  3. Grease and solids are removed from the trap.
  4. The chambers and baffles are cleaned.
  5. The trap is refitted, tested with water and the waste taken away.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Ask for a quote

For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You will typically have a quote within one working day.

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

For landlords and multi-site operators

From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Stockwell kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s data shows about 107 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 10 hotels and guest houses registered across Stockwell and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving food has a kitchen that collects grease out of sight and drains that need protecting. It’s Lambeth council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Stockwell. The state of floors, drains and hard-to-reach corners all feeds into the inspection. A cleaning log that includes deep cleans and grease trap visits shows the work is planned. In London, deep cleans and grease trap work are usually done overnight, so the kitchen opens as normal the next day.

Where a church or community hall near St. Andrew's, or anywhere in Stockwell, has a kitchen used by volunteers, a periodic deep clean keeps it ready for the next event. Healthcare kitchens cook through the year, so a deep clean has to be fitted around meals; St Giles' Hospital, about 1.7 miles east, is the nearest hospital to Stockwell.

Between visits

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Avoid pouring boiling water down to shift grease
  • Don’t store things on top of the trap
  • Book trap cleans at a set interval
  • Wipe grease off pans before washing them

Once the trap is cleaned and refitted, the sinks can be used right away. We run water through to check it drains before we go.

If the sinks are slow or smelly, the trap may be full. Getting it cleaned now can stop a full blockage later.

How we price grease trap cleaning

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • How big the system is
  • What state the system is in
  • Site rules, permits and inductions

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Helping us quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Any previous report or certificate

Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
