Grease trap cleaning in Shotgate
No two traps are quite the same. Under-sink traps are compact and need frequent attention, while inline traps and interceptors hold more. We assess the trap and how fast it fills before suggesting how often it needs cleaning. If you are dealing with washing-up water that won’t drain away and drains that gurgle and bubble, we can help.
For a kitchen in or near Shotgate, the visit is planned ahead, around opening times and the journey.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

What affects the cost of grease trap cleaning
We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- How many systems or sites are involved
- Where the site is and how we reach it
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
What we need to know
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- The site address and the type of premises
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Any previous report or certificate
- A few general shots of the system
We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

When something else is needed
It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:
- Plumbing leaks around the sink
- Drains that need jetting rather than trap cleaning
- Blockages in the public sewer beyond the property
Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly before booking.
Parts of the system we cover
- Restaurants and takeaways
- Pot wash sinks
- School and care home kitchens

- Kitchen waste pipes
- Inline grease traps
How it works
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a short visit for a small trap and longer for an inline unit or interceptor. In a small place like Shotgate, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.
- We find the trap and check how it’s connected.
- We ask for the sinks that drain into the trap not to be used.
- We take out the layer of fat, oil and grease and any solids.
- Every part of the trap is scraped and cleaned, including the baffles.
- We put it back together, run water through and remove the waste.
Before we arrive
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

Grease trap cleaning in Shotgate: local notes
Food Standards Agency records list about 35 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 23 sandwich bars and takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Shotgate. Each of them sends fat, oil and grease towards the drain, which is why grease traps need regular emptying. It’s Basildon council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Shotgate. An inspection covers the structure of the kitchen as well as the food. Having the dates of the last deep clean to hand saves digging for them on the day.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Beauchamps High School or anywhere near Shotgate, the holidays are the time for a deep clean or a grease trap clean. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Nicholas or elsewhere in Shotgate, a deep clean and an emptied grease trap before a busy season of events are worth booking. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Basildon University Hospital about 5.5 miles south-west, deep cleans and grease trap visits are planned so meals still go out.

Different parts, different methods
Inline grease traps
Inline traps often take waste from several sinks or appliances. More waste means faster filling.
Grease interceptors
Interceptors separate grease the same way, on a larger scale. Cooling water lets grease rise and solids settle.
Shotgate: your questions answered
Can school kitchens in Shotgate be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. With about 12 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Shotgate, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.
Can the work in Shotgate be done at night or at weekends?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in Shotgate can fit around your hours. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Why does a grease trap need regular cleaning?
An overfull trap lets grease into the drains. It sets there and narrows the pipes until they block. Regular cleaning prevents it.
What is TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
How much notice should we give?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not typically. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
We record them on the report, with pictures where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
What staff can safely do
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Why deal with it now?
Once the trap is full, grease heads for the drain. It hardens on the pipe walls until water cannot get through. Cleaning the trap regularly is far easier than clearing a blocked drain. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
